Harmful cleats of football boots: A Biomechanical Evaluation

A note to all parents & coaches , we have noticed a huge increase recently in knee injuries in junior and senior players in Rugby / GAA , Camogie , football & hurling.

Many of these injuries can be prevented by small changes in the footwear of the players, the recent trend is to wear boots with triangular studs , when the foot is planted in the ground the player tries to rotate the foot and the foot due to the triangular stud is staying planted in the ground , thus causing a severe rotation of the knee joint where injury is then sustained( particularly ACL/PLC Ruptures).

With a rounded stud the stud rotates effectively and the knee is rotating in line with the foot therefore no excessive pressure is put on the knee joint. It may be worth thinking about when purchasing your next pair of boots. Feel free to share.

For those of you looking for clinical based research there is plenty on both arguments, feel free to look them up.

Firstly, when the stud acts with maximum resistance against flow directed onto its drive surface, the “form drag” attributable to the abrupt drive surface is substantially supplemented by “friction drag” associated with the large surface area of the stud on the inclined downstream side.

Parkville United AFC 1 - 2 Baltinglass Town AFC
Baltinglass confirmed their position as league leaders with this win in Hawkins Lane. They started strongly but met fierce resistance from Parkville. Aidan Danker and Cormac Clifford were outstanding in defence and Miley Walker patrolling midfield. The home side then turned on the style with good attacks down the wings by Maria Healey, Tadg Nolan and Molly Haugh. However it was the visitors who scored just before half time through Josh Furlong. They doubled their lead straight after the break Conor O Toole with a great strike from the edge of the box. Parkville doubled their efforts with great work from Luke Monaghan and Robbie Knight and were rewarded with a goal from Maria Healey. Despite more late pressure they ran out of time and Baltinglass left with 3 precious points. It was another great team display for the visitors. Best for Parkville were Kate Byrne, Alex Sunderland and Ryan Lin.

A dower affair in baltic conditions with both goal keepers making good saves to keep the game scoreless. Baltinglass had the better of the first half but couldn't convert HT 0-0

Bally dominated the new half with a strong wind at their backs smd should have taken all 3 points when Jake Fitzpatrick was left with no one only the goalie to beat but his shot cannoned off the crossbar with 5 mins to go. With both defences on top it finished 0-0.

Baltinglass Town AFC 3 - 4 New Oak Boys AFC

A really entertaining match today in parkmore between 2 evenly matched sides.New oak started the brighter in the first 10 mins and raced into a 2v0 lead but the balto boys soon got a hold of the game and dominated from then to final whistle, the rest of the first half was balto creating chance after chance with some super play but couldn't put the ball in the net, thus was a really dominate performance by balto and should have gone in level at the break. Second half started off even but again balto got their grip on the game and dominated again, balto defense were brilliant and stopped new oak having many chances but in fairness when new oak got through they punished balto,

Final score : 3v4 in a excellent game

Balto scorers: Joe Kelly,Cathal mc Namara, and Charlie Wynne

Good performance by new oak
