Quality soccer on a windy day
Girls u12 08/02 12:15
Burrin Celtic AFC 2 - 1 St Joseph's AFC
On a day for kites this match was as the old cilche goes a game of 2 halves. Burrin started against the wind and Joe's used it cleverly to their advantage. But good hands from Ava Bolger kept Joe's at bay on a few accasions but on the 20th minute Lola Long broke the deadlock with a cracker. Burrin responded immediately and a rasper from Leah Mannion leveled the teams. Second half saw Burrin dominate possession and only for great goalkeeping from Ailish Stafford should have pulled away. Abbey Donaghy and Alex Hennessy working doggedly in defence, but great work from Anna Thornton, Julia Crawford, Grace ó Gorman and Caoimhe Dempsey saw Mannion in to finish the play with a neat bottom corner of the net finish. Joe's responded but Sarah Duffy, Emma Klejnowska and Bella Corr were in no mood for losing with great defending to see Celtic over the line. Brilliant play from both teams on a miserable day.

Burrin Celtic AFC 2 - 2 Nurney Villa AFC
it was a very blustery day in Ballon here today which made for difficult conditions for football but Burrin started very well playing against a strong wind and settled into a good rythem. The home side put Nurney under a lot of pressure but couldnt create anything clear cut Nurney all the time looking dangerous on the break but neither side could break the deadlock and it finished 0 0 at the break. Burrin started the second half superbly and had Nurney under all sort of pressure and it looked only a matter of time before they scored and with just under 10 minutes gone in the half they took the lead when the Nurney keeper couldnt hold onto a shot the ball was finished by Kurt Rothwell.Burrin still piled on the pressure and looked sure to double their lead but were caught out by a Nurney break away and it was 1 1. This seemed to spur Nurney on and they pushed for a second and were rewarded soon after when another break away saw them make it 2 1, Burrin rallied though and were determined to get something from the game and eventually all their pressure paid off when Edward o Byrne struck to leave it 2 2 at the end, Great credit to both sides for a very entertaining game played in difficult conditions.

The second half again saw some excellent goalkeeping as both teams looked to score. Bagenalstown had a succession of corners and Celtic hit the post but neither side could get past the keepers, with Burrin Celtic coming out on top 1-0 at the final whistle.

Burrin Celtic AFC 0 - 5 St Fiacc's AFC

The match started at a blustery Burrin Celtic pitch. Celtic had only seven players and with fiaccs having a full squad made it a very hard task, Celtic played with the wind in the first half. For the first ten minutes it was all square with the keepers playing very well. Then fiaccs played a lovely ball into their centre forward and he scored. 0-1.

Burrin Celtic had two chances one from leah Fitz which the defender heading the ball that was going into the top corner and grace walker had a chance with the St Fiaccs keeper pulling off a great save.

Then St Fiaccs scored two quick goals from long shot one lobbing the celtic keeper and one a screamer. 0-3.

Just before half time St fiaccs scored there forth with a shot coming off the keeper. Half time 0-4.

The second half Burrin Celtic where under a lot of pressure playing into a strong wind but they started to play the ball around and had a few half chances wit the St fiaccs keeper saving. The the St fiaccs pressure told and they scored with 10 minutes to go. There right full hitting the ball into the net. It was a great performance from the seven girls that played for celtic. Final score Burrin Celtic 0-5 St Fiaccs.

Best for Burrin Celtic, it was a great and gutsy performance by all of the girls.

This was a very entertaining game with both teams evenly matched. Chances were at a premium with both defences working hard to deny shooting opportuinities. After some Celtic pressure Jack Brennan scored the opener for Killeshin he caught Burrin on the break and slotted the ball into the corner. Burrin created a few chances of there own Danny Gibson and Jamie Maher going close. Killeshin's second was a penalty when handball was spotted in the box and Jack Brennan got his second from the spot. Michael Brophy was unlucky to see his effort go just wide for Burrin but it was too little too late. Best for Killeshin Ben Brady,Tristen Owens, Blake Rice and Oisin Kelly. Ballymurphy 5-0 Burrin Celtic

Bally took control of this game early and after a couple of missed chances, Tom Kehoe took the game by the scruff of the neck and his mazy run beating 4 defenders before slotting home on 12 mins. Bally really should have been further ahead at HT only for some brilliant goal keeping for the Burrin keeper. HT 1-0.

Bally upped a gear in the second half and played much better with Shane Jordan grabbing a brace on 34 and 37 before Noel Jordan produced another brilliant free kick on 56 mins. Michael Murphy ended the scoring on 59 mins with a cool finish. Best for Bally were Darragh Coleman, Rachel Martin and Mikala Kelly. For Burrin Grace Kennedy, Ella Dowling and Mollie Maher excelled

In what was an evenly-contested first-half, Celtic applied the early pressure and were denied early on by a great clearance off the line by Craig Burgess while at the other end, Slaney won a series of corners with efforts just wide of the target. The breakthrough came when Celtic`s Brandon Delaney was first to react to a loose ball and he netted to put Burrin 0-1 at the break. Slaney responded mid-way in the second half following a great burst up the right wing from Callum Brennan and a pin-point cross for Taylor Ryan to fire home a deserved equaliser. Burrin keeper James Dowling made a great save to deny Slaney a late winner to reward the efforts of Dermot Nolan and Kyle Connelly while Slaney were well served by Rory Doyle, Dylan Hopkins and Killian Bowes.

3-3 thriller sees Burrin and Parkville share the points
U15 League 25/01 11:30
Burrin Celtic AFC 3 - 3 Parkville United AFC

Parkville started off the faster side capitalizing on a counter attack early on to go 1-0 up. Burrin struggled to get up to the pace of the game and found themselves 3-0 down at the half with a result out of the game looking next to impossible. This Burrin Celtic side however never seem to quit.

Burrin started off brighter in the second half having majority of the ball. 5 minutes in they pulled one back from Glenn O’Rourke in the Burrin midfield lobbing the ball over the parkville keeper from deep in the half. This got Celtic going. They created a number of chances but the breakthrough coming from a scrappy daze of play in the parkville box. Burrin saw the ball forced over the line in a big crowd of bodies with Glenn O’Rourke and Sam Collier both trying to claim the goal. Frankie Fitzgerald and Conor deacon linked up fantastically down the right side of the field throughout the game. Evan Corr and Brian Hutton made sure the Burrin defense was locked down as they were determined they weren’t conceding another.

Sam Collier found himself in plenty of space in the parkville box and following some quick feet he curled the ball into the bottom right hand corner to level the score. Burrin tried and tried in the dying minutes of the half but they couldn’t find that winner they were looking for so both team shared the points.

A great team performance in the second half with Glenn O’Rourke standing out.

Also a great team performance from parkville who blitzed Burrin in the first half but struggled in the second.

A great game to watch.

Parkville United AFC 3 - 0 Burrin Celtic AFC

Parkville started well with the breeze in their favour with Marcus Ragelis netting his first of the day after 10 mins with a run from the right wing finishing with a right footed strike into the bottom corner. Burrin came back up the pitch with some great passing patterns which put them through but the chance went agonisingly wide of the post. Parkville doubled their lead when a scramble in the Burrin box fell to Ragelis again. This time burying it with his left foot.

Second half saw Parkville keep the pressure on with Dylan Walker taking his chance when he was put through by Ragelis to make it 3-0 after the 40 minute mark. Burrin kept plucking away keeping the Parkville defence honest with some great attacking play. Their corner tally hit double digits proven their territorial gains. But a stubborn Parkville back line kept the clean sheet.

The game finished 3-0 to Parkville.

An all round good team performance by Burrin Celtic.

Best for Parkville we’re Oisin Byrne, Kristers Laudupa and Marcus Ragelis.

Burrin Celtic won convincingly at home against league leaders Hanover Harps in windy conditions at The Valley. Celtic benefitted from the wind in the first half, keeping their visitors pinned in their own half for long periods. Cian Byrne broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a strike from just inside the box reaching the bottom corner of the Hanover net. Two minutes later, Jamie Behan put his team two up when a corner kick fell to feet in the penalty area and Jamie made no mistake with his finish. A display of skilled free taking followed from Celtic’s centre half, Fionn McCaffrey, as Hanover offences outside the penalty area were punished, resulting in a hat trick to remember for the Burrin Celtic player. Hanover faced an uphill struggle in the second half but to their credit they pressurised Celtic’s defence throughout. However, Celtic players were determined not to concede and they continued to look dangerous on the break. Myles Hutton finished the scoring mid way through the half as he controlled the ball in the box and finished from close range. This was a must win game for both sides at The Valley in challenging windy conditions. New Oak started the brighter but it was the Burrin Boys who scored first from a Kevin Murphy free kick but was deemed to be off-side. This left the sides all square at the half. New Oak pushed on in the second and got the opening when the ball broke from the back line and was finished by Ben Doorley. Keelan Lacey got the second with a super strike just outside the box. The Burrin Boys rallied and pulled one back with a goal from Jake Hickey with ten minutes to go and had a lot of late chances but couldn't find the equaliser.

Pat’s started well and had the ball in the Burrin Celtic net within 3 minutes direct from a brilliant Andrew Kehoe free kick only to see it disallowed for offside. The home side kept the pressure up but couldn’t find the net. Burrin Celtic were defending well and looked dangerous on the break. Pat’s couldn’t regain their initial momentum however and struggled to get their passing game going. On 37 minutes the ball fell to a Burrin Celtic player in the box and his shot squeezed in to the bottom corner. The score stayed at 0 -1 until half time.

Pat’s raised the tempo after half time and came out strongly playing some good football. On 43 minutes, a good ball by Andrew Kehoe found Jack Malone whose shot rebounded off the keeper into the path of the incoming Lord Amponsa Afrifa, who made no mistake with his finish to score the 100th league goal of the season for Pat’s. It was all Pat’s at this stage and Burrin Celtic were hanging on, but Pat’s missed a number of good chances, which was to ultimately cost them dearly. A tackle in the Pat’s area on Diarmaid Ruth saw him receive a lengthy period of treatment and he had to be substituted. Centre half Jack Mitchell also had to leave the pitch after recurrence of a recent injury. Pat’s tried hard to regain the initiative, but couldn’t get the tempo of the game back up and on 73 minutes a superb free kick was driven home by Burrin Celtic to put the visitors ahead again. Pat’s launched attack after attack for the last few minutes but couldn’t find an equalizer and Burrin Celtic held on to take all three points.

Best for Pat’s: Andrew Kehoe, Thomas Sheehan, Idris Jimoh

Best for Burrin Celtic: A great team performance
